Dementia affects more than 944,000 people in the UK alone and approximately 1 in 11 people over 65, sadly it is becoming more common as we tend to live longer and it is estimated to reach over 1 million by the year 2030.
Dementia can be caused by a number of diseases that affect the brain, Alzheimer's Disease is the most common, but it can also be caused by Vascular Dementia, Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Pick's Disease. Each type of dementia will have different symptoms, however in general, people affected will have difficulty with thinking, memory loss, problem solving and language.
As Dementia is becoming more common in our society its increasingly important that we all raise our collective awareness and understanding of how we can help people who suffer from it.
If you see someone who looks like they might be confused or having difficulty you can:
Be patient, smile, and ask if you can help them
Repeat yourself calmly if necessary
Break down a larger task into smaller steps
Do not rush them, move to somewhere quieter if they are in a queue
Reassure them, and offer to guide them through a task
If you cannot resolve their issue, ask if there is anyone you can call for them
There are lots of resources available for anyone who wishes to learn more about how they can help a person with Dementia, by becoming a Dementia Friend you can help to make life better for people affected. Please follow the link below to learn more:
